Kansas is turning Blue

March 13th, 2009

The final election data is finally in and has been broken down to the congressional district level. Swing State Project has undertaken the yeoman’s work of compiling the data and one bit of information stuck out. Kansas 3 – (Kansas city area) voted for Obama. You might have to find a chair to get over the shock. If I am correct this is the first time a Kansas congressional district has voted Democratic since 1964 (LBJ landslide). It wasn’t even very close. Obama landed 51% (187,372) to McCain’s 48% (177,814) with other garnering 3% (5,186). This is fantastic news and further proves that we can overcome the obstacles we face in McPherson County and the First District. All is takes is a lot of hard work and perseverance. If you follow the link you’ll see that KS-2 is changing as well. This is definitely change I can believe in. Let’s keep up the good work and make Kansas a competitive state.

Join us tomorrow at 121 S. Walnut

March 13th, 2009

I’d like to issue an open invitation to all who are interested in helping the McPherson Housing Coalition (I think that’s the right title) ready a house to be moved to another location. We will gather at 8 am 3/14/09 at 121 S. Walnut St. in McPherson to make the necessary preparations for the move. Refreshments will be served. As part of President Obama’s challenge, the McPherson County Democrats are endeavoring to aid our local community by volunteering for service projects. This is the first of many we have planned and we welcome anyone interested in helping. If you have any questions you can email me or call me at 620-245-7469. Thanks to all who have already volunteered and I hope to see everyone tomorrow morning.

From Balloon-Juice

February 26th, 2009

I read this post on Balloon-juice today and it really is worth a read.

The irony of all of this is what we are actually seeing is not the meltdown of the Republican party, but something bigger than that. The Grover Norquist troglodyte right is drowning themselves in the bathtub before our very eyes. It is truly a sight to see.

Community Service Help Needed

February 26th, 2009

I have sent an email to all the contacts I have in the email database, but I wanted to post this for anyone else who happens on it. We have been invited by the McPherson Housing Alliance to help them ready a home in McPherson to be moved. They need our help on March 14 at 8:00 am. We will be helping remove the chimney, clean bricks, attend to the exterior to enable the movers access to the perimeter of the house and some minor interior demolition. Please email me at chairman@mcphersoncodems.com if you can be there to help out. You help would be much appreciated.

Washington Days Upon Us

February 26th, 2009

This weekend I will travel to Topeka to take part in the annual Washington Days celebration. The state party plans the event as a fundraiser – Gov. Brian Schweitzer (D) MT is the headline speaker and state committee meetings Saturday. I am most looking forward to the County chair caucus meetings Saturday morning. My goals for the event is to network with other county chairs, especially those adjoining us and try to escape the vacuum that seems to capture county parties. Most of the state legislative and senate districts are multi-county and it is imperative that we begin a working relationship so we can begin to compete more effectively.

I’ll have more information on the state meetings when I return. If anyone has any concerns that need to be addressed on the state level email me and I’ll raise them.

Frustration

February 2nd, 2009

Forgive the tardiness in writing a new blog post. I’ve been pretty busy and really haven’t been in the right mood to come up with something worth reading. This evening, however, while watching Hardball and listening to Kit Bond (R) Mo, and Sheldon Whitehouse (D) RI debate the stimulus bill before the Senate, I found the mood. Bond was chastising the “Democrat” plan because of the deficits. It was a moment of the pot calling the kettle black. For the past 8 years, we’ve had nothing but run away spending and massive deficits and economic Armageddon and they are railing about deficits. I don’t like deficits either, but Keynes proved in the 1930’s that when in an economic collapse, the only entity with the wherewithal to rescue the economy is the government.

Combine the reckless spending and run-away tax cuts of the Reagan and Bush years with the woeful investment in our nations infrastructure and we’re in the situation we’re in right now. No end in sight. I’m not convinced, either that all the “compromising” Obama is doing with the Republicans is a good idea either. Republicans, politically, have a vested interest to see the plan fail. If it works, they’ll get no credit as it will go to Obama, so why would they support it. They are political animals after all. Therefore, watering it down in the guise of getting Republican votes is folly. The plan that needs to pass is the plan that the Obama administration and leading economists think will work. More tax cuts will not revive the economy. Once the economy is recovering, tax cuts will help keep the growth going, but tax cuts will not spur spending and investment. The argument between the Democrats and the Republicans can be summed up this way: “Which came first, the customer or the business?” If you believe that all it takes to get people to spend money is to have a business to spend it in, then you’re a classical economist. If you think the customer must first have the money to spend in a business, then your a Keynesian.

Since the Democrats and Obama won the election, most of the country is on the side of the Keynesian’s. They agree that people need money to spend. To have money to spend, people need jobs and what better investment, than to rebuild this country for a 21st. century economy. From our antiquated electrical grid to our crumbling roads and bridges, this country needs a shot in the arm. Rather than throw more money away on more tax cuts, we need to invest the money we’re borrowing from future generations, in them and their country. Thankfully FDR understood this. His legacy is the infrastructure in place today.

There, I’ve blown off some steam, but for this plan to work, we need to put pressure on Obama and the Democrats in Congress to pass a plan that will work, not one that might get a Republican vote or two. Weigh in with a comment if you want to.

Finally!

January 20th, 2009

At the stroke of noon eastern, the Bush administration finally ended. It seems like we’ve lost eight years of our lives – the economy is in worse shape than when Bush entered office; the budget surplus has evaporated and turned instead into a trillion plus dollar deficit and the standing of the US has never been lower in modern times. So while the last eight years have been stressful, frustrating and maddening, we can take pause in the fact that when America truly needs a leader, she finds one. No one in the public sphere seems better suited to help America dig out of the mess we’re in that Barack Obama. There will be stumbles along the way, but having an intelligent, well spoken, articulate and reasoned person in the Oval Office will make the journey bearable. Savor today – The work is just beginning; the work will be difficult – but judging that America just inaugurated an African American as President means that, in America anything is possible. Now – Let’s get to work rebuilding our country. Starting right here in McPherson County and Kansas – we have work to do. Together – We Can!

First Dist. Democrats

January 18th, 2009

Yesterday a group of McPherson County Democrats journeyed to Hutchinson for the First District Democrats re-organization meeting. We had a contingent of 5 people at the meeting, with Susan Buffington and I acting as the automatic voting delegates to the meeting. The keynote speaker for the event was State Treasurer, Dennis McKinney. McKinney stressed the importance for the First District organization to be more active in fundraising. He told us that there are many state legislative races coming up that could benefit from a strong support from the district committee; financial support that was not there in 2008. To bookend Mr. McKinney’s comments, the Chairman Moser stated that the 1st had lost one state legislator, Mark Treaster from Hutchinson, and lost all other challenger races.

One of my first goals as incoming chairman for McPherson county was to buttress the treasury. We cannot begin to change the electoral map, if we don’t raise enough money to field competitive challengers. As a local Democratic party, we have, for too long, simply used our gatherings as social events and not gotten down to the hard work necessary to build a competitive organization. I enjoy social gatherings and we need those also, but as chairman, I’m going to be asking over the next months for monetary support for the party, and for the hard work of dedicated volunteers. If we want to make certain that the Change we voted for in November succeeds and lasts we have to work very hard.

In that vein I am also asking for any and all volunteers that want to help build this party. We need you and your ideas. The entire delegation, present at yesterday’s meeting was elected as either alternate delegates or delegates to the State committee meeting in February at Topeka. I’ll be going, bringing with me the desire to help the State party foster goals and policies that will help Democrats get elected all across this state. It won’t be easy, but with your help we can do it. Just remember – Yes We Did!

Can you see the light at the end of the tunnel?

January 13th, 2009

I don’t know about you, but the thought, that in just a few minutes, we’ve only a week left to endure the nightmare of the Bush Administration. It’s been a long 8 years and finally I’m beginning to believe it will all be over. For a while it seemed like we’d never be rid of him. On that note, yesterday I sent out an email blast to all the people I had email addresses for announcing the exciting changes happening right here in McPherson County. The Central committee elected a new slate of officers and we have a website of our own. I’ve tried to make the site a place to go to for information about the state and county. If you need website links, I hope you’ll find them here. This blog is a forum for all people wishing to engage in conversation and exchange ideas. I’m not certain it all completely works, bug free, and I’d like for people to have the ability to post diaries. I’m not certain that is all bug free, but we’ll continue to work on it. If you have any suggestions or ideas, don’t hesitate to send them my way. We’ve got a lot of work to do and we need much help in moving this party forward.

I hope everyone is planning on attending the upcoming meeting on the 19th. You can find the specific information about it on the home page. Please bring your left leaning friends and enjoy our Countdown to Change. Just think, that will be the last night you go to sleep with a Bush in the White House. Now, that’s something to celebrate.

Hope to see all of you very soon!

Welcome to the 21st Century!

December 29th, 2008

It seems that the McPherson County Democrats have finally made it into the 21st century! After much work and dread the website is finally a reality. It’s been a busy month and a half since I was elected as the county chair. It’s also been very exciting. Seeing a finished (well almost) website that declares that we are still here and we are going to make certain our elected officials are held accountable to all the people. It’s exciting to see the final days of the dreaded Bush administration winding to a close and the hope of a new dawn that will finally start the nation on a road to healing our wounds. Even though times are tougher than any of us would want, it feels good to finally see the end of the Bush Administration.

I’m very grateful for the much needed help I’ve received from many friends and the team of officers I have. They have been a source of editing eyes, lofty ideas and encouragement to get things moving toward a day of electing more and better Democrats, not only in McPherson County, or Kansas but across this country. If everyone that wants to help change the world pulls together, it will happen. I encourage everyone that is interested to post a comment to this blog and if you have an idea for a post let me know. This is intended to be a forum for the exchange of ideas and information. If you have a community event that you would like posted or other information, just let me know and I’ll post it. Most of all I want this to become a community of online activists ready to help make Change a reality.
